Join us for an evening talk and practice session with Lama Ying-rig Dorje, exploring the spiritual warriorship practices of King Gesar of Ling during his visit to New York City. Lama Ying-rig Dorje received the Ling Gésar robes and implements from Kyabjé Künzang Dorje Rinpoche, the holder of the “treasures of Ling Gésar.”
King Gesar of Ling is a legendary figure in Tibetan Buddhist culture, revered both as a historical warrior-king and a spiritual emanation with profound significance in Vajrayana practice. The physical, energetic, sound, and other practices associated with these teachings help deepen our capacity to engage with others skillfully, uncompromisingly, and with deep compassion.
At the heart of the Ling Gésar spiritual teachings lies the ability to dance with opposition—embracing wisdom and skillful means in the face of challenges. This introductory discussion will explore how we can apply these teachings in our own lives, including ways to cultivate extraordinary sensitivity, develop skillful communication, and deepen our ability to attune to each moment through heightened awareness and skillful means.
Lama Ying-rig Dorje will offer an introduction to the art of spiritual warriorship through the lens of an experienced martial arts practitioner and Buddhist teacher. Martial artists and/or Buddhist practitioners and/or others with an interest in the inner life or spiritual work of martial practice may find this event particularly interesting. All are welcome.
About the Teacher
Lama Ying-rig Dorjé is a warm, open, and approachable teacher, known for his joyful presence and his ability to explain teachings with clarity and depth. His main purpose has always been to uplift everyone he meets.
In 1992, he became an apprentice of Ngak’chang Rinpoche and Khandro Déchen, and in 2000, he was ordained as a Naljorpa. Since then, he has studied and taught sKu-mNyé, among other physical practices within the Yogic Buddhist traditions. sKu-mNyé is a Buddhist physical practice that engages both the energetic and physical systems through movements ranging from gentle to more rigorous, supporting holistic well-being and spiritual development.
Before becoming a Buddhist practitioner and teacher, Lama Ying-rig Dorjé taught Pencak Silat, the Indonesian martial art, having studied martial arts since the age of 14. However, he eventually sought greater depth regarding the nature of the mind itself.
He received the Ling Gésar robes and implements from Kyabjé Künzang Dorje Rinpoche, and now studies and holds the treasures of Ling Gésar—the epitome of spiritual warriorship and sovereignty in the Vajrayana and Dzogchen traditions. Lama Ying-rig Dorjé has also received training in the martial healing arts associated with Ling Gésar, including the use of knives and swords, as well as other methods such as mantras. These practices focus on raising rLung rTa (enthusiasm), maintaining srog (life force), and enhancing lha (dynamic drive), all of which promote good health, vitality, longevity, and charismatic lucidity. Currently residing in Finland, Lama Ying-rig Dorjé speaks multiple languages, teaches throughout Europe, and travels to the East each year to spend time with teachers and visit sacred sites.
